Teeth Whitening

Teeth whitening refers to a process where the shade and color of the tooth is permanently altered by using compounds that diffuse through the enamel of the tooth and remove stains and discoloration from the inside. Teeth whitening is sometimes misunderstood and confused with teeth cleaning in which the plaque and stains are removed from the surface of the tooth. The compound used in teeth whitening is either a peroxide or carboxide derivative. These compounds chemically react with stains and change their composition rendering them colorless and as a result, teeth will look white and bright as they were when they first were formed in the mouth.

Although all whitening systems use the same ingredients, the processes may be different. There are take-home products where the strength of the whitening gel is between 10 and 20 percent and therefore these products work at a slower rate. But the advantage of of take home whitening is that this type of system gives patients the ability to control time, pace and the degree of whitening. It also provides better management of sensitivity during the process. There are also in-office systems that use higher strength products providing instant result for patients who want immediate result. These systems include Zoom, Boost and other similar systems. In-office systems usually take about one hour with about 15-30 minutes of preparation time and there is a possibility of minor sensitivity which will go away in a day or two. No matter which method the patient prefers, the result is always predictable.

Since daily life includes the consumption of foods and drinks that can stain teeth, an in-home maintenance treatment is necessary after obtaining the desired result to maintain the shade of your teeth. We will provide custom made whitening trays at no charge for our patients who choose in-office systems so they can maintain their beautiful smile at home. Besides maintenance,We also recommend fluoride treatment at different intervals for patients who like to perform teeth whitening procedures.

When planned ahead with the resulting smile in mind, a clinician can use veneers to create a smile that is specifically designed for each patients individually. Veneers can also be used to restore single tooth defects, discoloration or fracture by covering the front surface of the tooth to improve appearance. Veneers are bonded to the enamel forming one of the strongest bonds available in dentistry which makes them very predictable and long lasting.

Dental Veneers offer the following advantages: They provide a natural tooth appearance, create a smooth transition at the junction of enamel providing optimum obtainable gingival health, and they are stain resistant. A minimal amount of the natural tooth structure alteration is required to fit dental veneers rendering them the most conservative cosmetic procedures. Veneers can be matched to make even the darkest teeth appear to be bright white. Minor twists and overlaps, as well as small gaps, can be quickly corrected through the use of veneers.
